WORKING
WITH
THE
WOODS
Work the woods slowly & in
multiple phases, keeping them in a controlled
environment that is cool & not too dry. It is
recommended to apply a sealant to any piece of wood
immediately after each & every turning/working,
particularly with woods that haven't been kiln dried as
this can help prevent cracking or checking. Another
method is to put the piece in a plastic bag with some of
the woods shavings.
Note:
Inspect piece frequently as working and
seal any
checks immediately with CA glue to prevent the
check from running further into the piece.
Use very sharp tools & work very slowly to generate minimal heat,
applying thin CA glue as needed.
WAX
REMOVAL
Many of our woods have
been sealed with Paraffin wax to help protect against
cracking and checking.
If you're going to be turning the wood, the wax doesn't
need to be removed because it will come off naturally
while turning. Otherwise, the wax can be removed by
using a simple paint scraper, razor blade, or other
scraping implement.
DRYNESS
Most of our
woods have been air dried, for various lengths of time.
A few woods have been kiln dried if so, we try to note
them as being such on our Web site. Because the moisture
content of each individual piece varies widely,
additional drying may be necessary (particularly with
pieces that are entirely encased in wax). If you're not
sure about the dryness, you may want to check the
moisture content of certain pieces with a moisture meter
before beginning work.
STORAGE
At our warehouse, where we
store our woods, we maintain a humidity range of
approximately 55 to 65 percent, and a temperature level
of around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to reduce the
chances of cracking or checking, you should try to store
the woods in a place that doesn't deviate greatly from
these levels. If this is not possible, then try to
acclimate the wood slowly to its new environment.
WOOD TOXICITY
Toxicity levels vary from wood to wood. To be on the
safe side, it's recommended to take precautions to
protect one's eyes, breathing, and skin whenever
generating wood dust/chips.
RETURNS
If you receive a
damaged or partially defective piece of wood, please
notify us within 3 days to request a replacement piece,
credit or partial credit. For returns of non-defective
pieces, you'll have 30 days to request a credit or
refund (minus shipping charges and a 20-percent
restocking fee). Any wood being returned to us must
remain in its original state; pieces that have developed
checks or cracks subsequent to being shipped, or that
have been cut, sanded, or altered in any way, are not
returnable.
