Macassar Ebony
Macassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica),
known for its streaking pattern of its heartwood, produces colors from
light tan to dark brown/black streaks. It is desired by all wood workers
who want to produce highly unique items.
Macassar Ebony is native to
India, Indonesia and the Philippines.
The wood is hard and dense with an average specific gravity of about
1.09. The trunks of these rather small trees only reach
diameters of about 18". Macassar Ebony can be difficult to work with,
but turns well. When working with the wood, it is recommended to use
sharp tools and work the wood slowly (to avoid producesing excessive
heat, which may damage the wood!). You also want to avoid
causing excessive heat when sanding this wood, as it could also
cause damage. |
