Gabon Ebony
Gabon Ebony (Diospyros
crassiflora)
is known as one of the most blackest woods
available. It is
very hard and dense with an average specific gravity of about 1.03.
Gabon Ebony is widely used by all wood carvers & turners, and
instrument & furniture makers who are in need of a very black durable
wood. It is especially used to highlight and accent other woods being
used in the same piece. Because the Diospyros crassiflora trees are
generally small in size, Gabon Ebony is usually only available in
widths of 6" or less.
Even though the Gabon Ebony is
quite hard and dense, you will find that the wood works/turns very nicely.
However very sharp tools are needed when working with this wood.
It is also highly advised
that precautions are taken to protect one's breathing,
eyes, and skin while working with Gabon Ebony!
